POLL: What the best type of metal for car parts?

POLL: What the best type of metal for car parts?

I'm tryin to pimp out my 2000 ford focus and I want to know what is the best metal for hubcaps, mufflers, ect.

Chrome

Alloy

Stainless Steel

Aluminum

Also what type of metal is the standard and comes with most cars?|||You should use different metals for different tasks.

Chrome is only suitable as a coating and parts are rarely made from chrome. It's a wonderful material to coat some types of parts as it can protect against corrosion and tends to look good.

Alloy is actually the generic term for any two or more metals combined together. Most metals used in car construction are alloys or at least not pure. Aluminium is rarely found as anything except an alloy.

Stainless steel, or as it is usually referred to in the industry, corrosion resistant steel, is very useful for parts which might otherwise corrode, but otherwise its properties aren't great. Other alloys tend to work better where corrosion is unlikely to be a problem.

Aluminium, or more precisely, aluminium alloys are fantastic for certain car parts. It tends to be fairly corrosion resilient while also being quite light, but it is expensive for structural items. It is perfect for use in lightweight wheels and engine parts.

Carbon fibre reinforced plastic (usually known as carbon fibre) is also very useful, though expensive.

For wheels, if you can't stretch to the cost of CFRP ones, magnesium alloy wheels can be exceptionally light (good for handling and ride).

For hubcaps, either aluminium, plastic or chrome plated is pretty essential to keep corrosion down. That said, hubcaps add weight and rarely do anything to the performance of the car.

For mufflers, chrome plating, or stainless steel is good as these are very prone to corrosion (high temperatures and lots of access to moisture). Aluminium doesn't work so well here are it tends to not handle the heat so well.

Where Can I Learn How To Take Off The Parts Of A Car?

Should a car newbie sticking with Genuine honda car parts or go for aftermarket parts?

I have an 2001 Honda Accord LX 4-cyl, and sooner or later I will be confronted to purchase car parts for my car. My question is should I stick with all genuine honda parts or go for the aftermarket parts? If so, what are the pros and cons of it?|||pros = genuine honda parts, most come with a warranty

cons - super expensive, labor for them at the honda dealership even more expensive

you should be more specific on what parts you need, everything you need for your engine doesnt have to be a honda part..|||On a relatively new vehicles (not ford!) - let's say up to 10 yo - I would use Honda parts. After all, you don't need them too often, and a few extra bucks may save you truckload of grief. When the vehicle gets to the point of potentially dying for good - 200,000+ (50K for ford) miles - I usually switch to aftermarket. But again, it all depends on a particular part - I would NEVER buy an aftermarket oil filter because no matter how you look at it, engine replacement is more costly than $2 difference. Same goes for spark plugs, brake pads, and suchlike. Quite frankly, I never had to deal with more significant components needing replacement on all my numerous hondas over the last 20 years.|||I have never had any problems using aftermarket parts. For honda's, auto tranny fluid, radiotor fluid should be genuine honda stuff. Everything else, spark plugs, wires. brake pads, rotors etc. can be aftermarket.|||Honda has some solid aftermarkets part support. The genuine parts are expensive but very reliable. It depends on the situation and part for the car. If you had a specific part I could tell you if there was an excellent aftermarket source or not.|||After market are cheaper, and just as good.|||After market would be fine as most of the stuff is made in china with USA stickers

How do I sell a used car for parts?

The car is in another state, at a repair chop about 1000 miles away. The engine is blown. Its a seven year old car, although the tires are new.

What would be the best move? I'm going down there on some other family business. Would it be best to take it apart and sell the parts? How do I figure what I should get for the parts?|||depending on how long it been at the shop and what they might charge you to have kelpt it there it might just be best to let them have it unless you got a big turck and can tow it to and from you dont have many choices you might be able to sell it for junk at a junk yard and really it might take yrs to get rid of parts depending on the make and model and year|||it is gonna take some time and some tools, u up for that? if you are call junk yards and see what they price they give you|||You can take it to a junk yard and sell the car to them. They just leave it there and when anyone needs parts they just take them and pay. Or, you can take it apart yourself and sell it on ebay/craigslist.|||You would be wisest to turn your back on this car right now, after of course paying the repair shop's bill. Let THEM sell it because they are on the spot, or let them have the car instead of paying them in cash for the bill. Your main prob is that you are too far away from the car to be able to spend time dismantling it.

No, forget the car. There are plenty more cars out there.|||Wow tuff situation, 1st do you have a clear title? most states require this, next point is yes you would usually make more money parting out a car however the model, year and style do affect this as a 1978 granada wont bring you squate parting out(example only) but a 1970 mach 1 will. this devise we are using will give you an idea on prices for the parts search your car model in wrecking yards search and price say a replacement right door should do the trick|||Try posting it on "Craigs list" in the area where the car is.

If I buy car parts (hood, headlights, bumper cover), will an auto shop put the parts I buy on my car for me?

I'm looking to save some money by buying cheaper parts online or at junk shops. If I buy these parts, can I bring them to an auto shop, and will they put the parts on the car for me? Or will they tell me that I have to buy new parts from them?|||Yes i agree with the guy 2 above me. Most shops DO NOT install parts you buy yourself. They fear about having being responsible if something should go wrong. ie. if your bumper cracks because it is crap. They dont wanna be responsible for these types of things. If anything, just go on a forum and see if there is anyone in your area that would do it for you. Maybe you can get away with just buying beer and meals. Maybe a little bit more. Cheap is NEVER better. Do alot of research before you commit to buying a part. Don't buy cheap body parts, they NEVER match up and you will have to get more body work done. Good luck with them though.|||Well, as a mechanic (part time now), I can honestly tell you that you won't save any money by having a shop put it on. They will likley charge you almost as much "for labor" as they would if you had bought it from them and had them install it. I recommend finding a friend or a neighbor to help you out. Even better, you can have someone teach you how to do it by example, that way it'll be done and you know how to fix it if it has to be replaced. It would be way cheaper to bribe a friend to do it (if they know how to do it).|||depending on the shop, they most likely will put on your parts but they won't offer a guarantee or warranty if the parts fail, do not fit, or in turn cause problems to other parts of the vehicle. basically you will release their liability if anything goes wrong. and if they attempt to put your parts on and it doesn't fit or if they screw something up, guess what, you're still paying them for their time and labor. best bet is to shop around for a good deal on parts and labor! good luck!|||Most likely not. Auto repair shops make money on the parts that they order. Plus, they will not want to guarantee that the parts that you scavenged will actually fit your car. If you want to save some money, learn how to put the parts on the car yourself.|||Yes any car shop will put your parts on as long as they are made for your car. The shop will probably charge you labor plus a fee for bringing your own parts. get a couple of different quotes before you allow any bastard mechanic to touch your ride. Good luck.|||Most shops do not i have run a shop for over 35 years and we do not install parts that you bought. If you would like us to get them from a junk yard we will do that. But we do not install your parts.|||They will do it. It's a "labor only" sale. They don't mind. Ya they make slightly less money because they don't charge a fee for the parts. But, they don't have to waste the time to get them for you.|||No reputable repair shop will use your parts, some independents might do it. Hit up the Community college and see if they have any openings for it. Or do it yourself.|||umm im not sure but i think you can just tell them to put it on for you.... but they might charge you so they can put it on for you. for the labor work|||Some places will, but your better off with a friend that knows a bit,as for parts buying and what not. It could easily end up costing you more... Sometimes cheaper parts will not fit properly....or are not exact....|||no...they're supposed to put on YOUR parts. (providing you get the correct ones...) cheap is not always better and will not always work...(especially on Honda's.)

Can you bring car parts in your carry-on luggage when you fly?

I'm planning on packing a set of ceramic/metal brake pads for a car in my carry-on luggage. I'm flying between Canada/USA. Is this allowed?|||yes you can bring them. however, they will probably pull you aside and do a thorough search. why? they won't know what they are at first, and it's out of the ordinary. that goes for putting anything atypical in your luggage.

as long as you aren't bothered by that and allocate for the delay no problem. if not, check the bags. and, if you do that, make sure they can open the checked bag, because it's likely they'll unpack them to take a look. whenever i put my car GPS in my packed luggage, i find that it's been opened and rifled through. if you lock your checked luggage, they'll cut it open.|||Hard to say.

They're not specifically on the prohibited list

but they would probably look really suspicious on the x-ray machine.

Can't you put them in your checked bag? They'd be no problem there.

What other car parts will fit my 1972 El Camino?

I got a 1972 Elky that im working on. Trying to find out what other car(Model, Make, Year) parts will also fit my car. Informatino would be much appreciated. Maybe a website or so...|||it's based off the chevelle/malibu wagon. third generation. 68-72.

physical fitment of sheet metal/glass/interior from the front bumper to the "B" pillars will be the same with any 70-72 chevelle/malibu wagon or sedan. with some changes to trim. doors will be of two door config. 68-69 were different in regards to sheet metal. but the platform is the same.

engine and drive train is ridiculously interchangeable with just about anything relating to a chevy V8 up to 72. later as well, but the motors around 73-74 start getting EPA choked. dual diaphragm distributors, AIR pumps and lower compression. anything after 74 will be "in distributor" coil packs. 74 was last year for points.

Are electric car parts cheaper than car parts for gasoline powered cars?

I'm doing a school report and I'm comparing electric cars to gasoline powered cars to see if car dealers should sell electric cars.|||some of the electric car parts are more expensive but most of them lasts longer than gas powered cars|||Yes, out of 800 million vehicles on the planet, the world's cheapest vehicle to operate IS AN ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK.

However, the electric car INDUSTRY is dead.

The Electric Vehicle (taken as a "cottage" industry) can possibly be saved if the high cost of replacement batteries can be reduced. At the present time, the replacement batteries cost [2X-10X] that of paying for gasoline on a per-mile basis. Reference: http://ev-diary-experiment.blogspot.com/

In the January 2008 issue of Wired magazine, there is a cost-analysis of electric versus gasoline vehicles which purports that electricity cost is under $300 a year for electric, and $1,800 a year for gasoline. However, the Wired magazine doesn't take into consideration the depreciation of the electric car battery. For a Lithium-Ion electric car, the cost of a battery pack is approximately $30,000 and a careless procedure or electronic or battery charger's software failure could wipe that out; as it has with several electric vehicle owners.

However, the Revived Battery electric pickup truck, which has a running cost of 30 cents a day, is probably the world's cheapest vehicle to operate. (Reference: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/30-cent-a-day-cost-to-operate-wld1st-electric-pickup-vehicle/372488112

Reference: Google search this - WORLD'S CHEAPEST VEHICLE TO OPERATE|||i dont know much about cars but i think that electric cars parts are more expensive because they are more rare|||I have an electric car, and in general common parts (brakes, lights, tires and such) are the same price as a 'regular' car. However, electric cars are much easier to maintain - no oil to change, no gas or oil filters, no exhaust system to smog check every year, no radiator to keep full of antifreeze. Since those parts don't exist on an electric car, you can't spend money on them.

But as with everything, there are trade-offs. Many electric cars are conversions - the gasoline engine and parts to make it work are removed, and an electric motor, batteries, and controller is installed (along with other parts such as wiring). The motor and controller are generally maintenance free, but lead acid batteries (most common in electric car conversions) need to be checked every month or so, and filled with distilled water (about $2.00 a gallon - I hardly use a gallon a year).

Eventually the batteries will wear out, and will have to be replaced in four or five years (depending on how they are used). If they are abused, they may only last a year or two. If they are babied they may last more than five years. The batteries are recycled by the battery dealer.

The cost will depend on how many batteries are in the vehicle, but a rough estimate is about $90 for each six-volt battery, or about $1440 for a 96 volt car. Divided by five years, the batteries cost about $288 a year, or about the same as having the annual smog check done and getting the oil changed three or four times a year.

My electric car uses about 1 kilowatt hour of electricity to go three miles. Our city has a special rate for charging electric cars, and it costs six cents per kilowatt hour, or two cents a mile. In contrast, my 'gas' car (a Prius) gets 48 MPG, and with gasoline at $3.40 a gallon, the per mile cost is about seven cents.

Good luck with the report!|||there are way fewer parts for electric than for gas cars, but some of them are costly,

when you compare total value, the electric is less for everything but the batteries.|||Try Voltage Autos or EVolt Cars

Do know any online discount car parts stores?

I took my car to a honda dealership. They want $400 to fix a master switch in a 96' Honda accord.

seems outrageous.

I am going to order the part from online. Know a good place to order it?

help!|||Here are three. There are dozens more. Just as an FYI if they're replacing the complete switch assembly the price for the part alone is about $150. Add a few hours labor to disassemble your steering column to get to the wiring and $400 might actually be a very fair price. Get some estimates at an independent garage who usually are a bit cheaper than a dealer.|||I'm not sure what a "master switch" is but many parts are only available through authorized Honda dealers. You may not be able to buy this part from an independent parts supplier.

It may not be the price of the switch that is your problem, it may be the high cost of labor the dealership is charging you to install the switch.

Ask the Service Adviser at the Honda dealer to give you the repair estimate in writing including the itemized cost of parts and labor. Then go out and get a second and third opinion.|||Autowarehouse.com, Car Parts Street.com, even Ebay you can find bargains. many are afraid of Ebay, but I have ordered parts from there without a problem. the sellers are usually 100% legit.|||Try jcwhitney.com

Are foreign car parts really more expensie than american car parts?

By foreign, I mean toyota, honda, suzuki, hyundai, and kia (the latter two seem to be terrible but have great warranties). 3.DEPENDING ON THECAR.

EVERY CAR HAS IT'S PROBLEMS THE REAL TRICK IS TO KNOW WHAT PROBLEMS ARE AND BUYING THE ONE THAT DOSN'T BLOWN AN ENGINE OR TRANS ALL THE TIME|||I'm so glad you asked this question.

As an appraiser, I always get steamed when all a car needs is a little doohicky, but to get it, you have to buy an entire assembly for hundreds of dollars.

All the foreign carmakers are villians when it comes to forcing the consumer to buy entire assemblies. I don't run into this on American cars as much, and I've got to plug Saturn for having the most reasonable part prices in the entire industry.

I drive a 40 year old car, but if I were to buy a new car, I'd get a Saturn.

.|||They might be sleightly more expensive (say 5-10%) due to tariffs mainly.

But they can't be too much more expensive, without benefits such as reliabillity, or else those cars would not sell.

So don't sweat it. They will probably last longer.|||Yeah. My dads old S-10s air filter was alot cheaper than my moms old Honda|||For a change, the dealer told you the truth - Lexus is a bit more expensive to fix than a lincoln BUT the difference is not drastic AND you don't need to fix it on a daily basis... unlike navigator. Not to mention gas mileage.

BTW, what's wrong with buying a smaller but NEW vehicle?|||IMHO I feel that they are more expensive. The American cars are just as good, and now they are even out ranking the foreign cars for safety. I haven't bought any parts for foreign cars in decades. I don't mess with them. but the last parts that I bought were quite expensive as compared to the American counter part.

Get what you want. It is America after all. But think about keeping the money in the US. We have a bad enough trade deficit now no use making it worse. good luck|||I am assuming you are considering buying a car. Here is the bottom line.

Domestic car parts are less expensive and fixing them less expensive than forign cars.

The top Japanese cars are so reliable they break or wear out less often. Japanese cars have higher resale value.

The Japanese cars are therefore better values.|||I have found this to be true many times. If you have a friend at a parts store, you can cross reference the parts and buy the same brand at a lower price.|||No they are not more expensive. Most car parts for American cars are not made in this country. Toyota and Honda products are very reliable. Check out consumer reports April issue.|||Flat Out YES, but they tend to be more reliable but it cost so much more in the long run

How can I replace car parts?

I have some car parts like Fog Light, muffler, Bumper, and Antenna that I want to replace on my car If I buy the parts myself can I have someone like a mechanic put them on for me at the auto shop?|||Well Crystal mechanical shops like to sell you parts themselves for several reasons the main one being profit. However times being tough and all many will let you bring your own parts. Call and make them aware of your wishes before taking your car in. One thing to remember though is if you supply your own parts most shops will not warranty your repairs and you need to make sure the parts you bring them are the correct ones not always an easy task. Hope this helps.

How much more do foreign car parts cost than domestic parts?

For example, how much more would Mazda3 parts cost than Ford Focus parts?|||that's almost impossible to answer ,because you didn't ask for any part in particular, and some of the foreign parts are cheaper than the American made ones, some of the parts for the fords are pretty expensive these days, while prices aren't that bad on some of the things on a mazda, good luck.

Is it better to sell your car for parts than selling the car itself?

My car started having some issues but was still running until my cousin tried to fix it and apparently didn't know what he was doing. Now it doesn't work. I had already been thinking about selling the car but now there's no way I could get nearly as much money for it. To get more money, would it be better to sell it for parts or just sell the car to somebody as a fix up?|||You should sell it as is because you would have to take it apart and find a market to sell it too I mean how many people are looking for that specific part of your car 1/5000 depending on how many cars were made and beside you'll never get rid of it in parts you'll just end up with scrap metal at the end and some people while they're taking parts they want will tend to break other things to get What they need just sell it from 400-600 depending on the year and how clean it is|||why don't you take it to a mechanic and see what's wrong with it. then if its a fix you can afford, have it repaired and sell it for more money|||You might be able to get more money by selling it in parts, depends on what kind of car it is.

How do I sell a car for parts, since I cant afford to fix it?

My 1998 toyota was just in an accident. I dont have collision coverage since the car is so old, so I cant afford to fix it. And also if you a radio station where you live that has a program that you can advertise on you can go that route. I'm looking to buy a tail lamp assembly for my car. The website I'm buying from is giving me the choice between Economy and Standard. Standard is more expensive. Other than the price, what's the difference?|||the economy one will be the cheaper one ,probably after market one, standard will probably be by the auto maker or a well known after market part, there is a difference in quality also, the economy one will be cheaper made, and may differ a little in appearance, very little though,it wont be made as well, good luck on it.|||your welcome.

|||generally, that's the terms for shipping. however, it could also mean OEM parts versus aftermarket parts.|||The thickness of the parts will vary greatly. Don't go economy.

Have pride in your car...use at least the standard grade, and the car will last longer.|||Standard will be a direct replacement, while economy will require removal of salvageable parts to be reinstalled on the new housing. Often the needed parts will break while removing them. Missing clips, etc.|||Easy, one is pay-less and the other is name brand. Depending upon the owner and how much she/he loves their car you can go either way. My advice go OEM straight from the dealer. I myself had so many bad experiences from after market parts that are sold at those non-dealer auto part stores. Most dealerships get straight from the manufacturer that specializes on that certain make only vs the after market parts are from junkyards and re-cleaned and painted. But here is the downfall to after market parts what if you bought an after market part but never realized that the part came from a car that had an accident. Something to think about. Hope this helps!

How to sell a car for parts?

I decided to sell the 1980 Mercedes for parts. As I posted a week ago if anybody remembers, the car is pretty rusty and I just discovered that the drivers side floor is falling through. I was originally going to sell it as a car but decided that it would be easier to sell for parts. Does anybody know how can do this (price wise and other) without getting ripped off, and without ripping somebody else off?|||car parts do sell on Ebay and other auction sites.

Anyone know the definitions to these car parts?

i have to do a crossword puzzle with the car parts as the words.

im having trouble looking up definitions for these words:

alternator warning light

automatic choke

friction point

head restraints

hood release

shift indicator

ignition switch

thanks to anyone who can help!|||alternator warning light: I'm not familiar with the specific light as I would guess its on mainly utility vehicals with high power loads. It would be a light that would come on if the alternator was nearing capacity for creating power.

Automatic Choke: automaticaly richens the air/fuel mixture to allow the starting of an engine when cold.

Friction point: I would guess the point where the clutch first starts grabbing. I'v always herd this refered to a 'clutch point'

Hood release: lever that releases the hood

shift indicator: a feature on some tachometers that indicates that ideal shift point.

ignition switch: what turns on the car. ie. key and starter...|||alt. warning light-- dummy light

hood release---lever to release the hood latch

shift indicator-- tells you when to shift gears

What are the names of these car parts and how much will it cost to get them fixed?

i just hit a car while i was making a left turn ... the division between the passenger side door and the body surrounding my fender (the part more towards the rear of the car) was hit. the fender, part of my passenger side door, and the other part of the door division (more towards the front of the car) are all dented pretty badly. what are the specific names of these parts, and how much will it cost to get them fixed?

also, what does that accordian-looking thing do in between the door and the car (when the door is open)? ... because that now has a hole in it.

please help!! thanks!!|||depends on the car; sounds like the door, pillar and rear quarter panel. Some cars are cheap, some expensive. You should ask at the junkyard first, if you actually need to replace these parts, which may be cheaper than repairing them (or may not). The accordion thing holds the wires going to the window, lock etc. If all it has is a hole in it I'd clean it up with a solvent like acetone and get some rubber gunk in a tube and seal the hole. You don't want to pull out all those wires if you can help it......|||Thats more likely a estimating of a thousand dollars.|||the accordian thing protects the wires going into the door.

sounds like 2 new doors and a fender, or 2 door skins just the outer shell of the door and a fender repair depends on the shop.|||The doors are going to be costly, unless you can get them from a car salvage yard. No matter what the make and model of your car, the fender (the part of the car between the door and the bumper) cost is going to kill you. The accordian thingy you refer to is a casing for the hinge and it keeps out moisture and keeps in lubricant. If you have to replace the bumper, take a second mortgage out on the house. I had a 1985 Cadillac whose bumper was busted to s**t and it was going to cost me $5000 to replace. See what I mean about the second mortgage? By the way, did you have the green light to turn? If you did, the other drivers insurance is responsible for the repairs to your car.|||depends on what kind of car. I just paid $200 for a door at a junk yard. What do illegal car parts effect in terms of your insurance/ smog check/ DMV?

was thinking about letting my friend build me a custom cold air intake and him installing it into my car. If i were to do this im pretty sure that i would have to replace it every smog check, but how will it affect my insurance if i were to get into an accident with it? What other things should i know if i were to drive with illegal car parts in terms of other mechanics fixing it or just other info...

Thanks.|||No, there is no smog device before the metering device, and that is all he would or could replace. Nor is any device illegal. Modifications are all legal, as long as you pass DEQ, and you can always apply for a variance even if you do not pass, as custom and race cars often do.

Nor does the insurance company have any authority to know anything at all about it.

Have the world modifies their engines somehow, with chips, cold air intakes, and even turbo chargers.

If Ferrari can sell new cars with all this stuff and all that horsepower, you can do it to your car as well. It is not illegal until they start making Ferraris illegal.

Are they going to fail you if you put a Ferrari engine into your car?

I don't think so.

What DEQ will check is whether or not you are illegally diverting exhaust around the tailpipe, where they are trying to check it.

But if you live in California, you should probably check their laws in more detail, because they do lots of things that don't make sense and are not really legal. That is because they claim no one needs to be able to drive.

What is the average cost and necessary parts for the average kit car?

i am not taking about a body kit, but a kit car. what does the average kit cost. i have all of the tools (or can borrow them), and with DIY paint. i am looking for a 1940's style car, maybe a sedan. can you tell me;

- the average cost of a kit car

- what parts are included

- what parts are needed

- what are common donor cars

- what is a good kit car company

- and what is the biggest kit car company?|||Costs vary widely, as do the style and composition of kit cars. There are body kits that just add a different appearance to an existing car and cost a few hundred dollars, to complete, from the ground up rolling automobiles, ready to drop your engine and transmission in, and drive away, and these can cost many thousands.

I'd suggest you do some research on your own to decide what and if you really want to do with a kit car. Try a Google search for 'kit cars'

How should i buy my car parts? shop or myself?

So i need to buy fuel injection and idle motor for my lincoln town car 2000

and they said something about F1 or ff1 that was related with the fuel injection. Do you guys or girls think that's its better to buy the parts myself and then go to an autoshop to change them or should i let them order the parts and fix it. What about be cheaper.|||This is like bringing your own food to a restaurant %26amp; asking them to prepare it.|||Generally the shop is not going to charge you much more for the parts than you can buy them for yourself, unless your going to a dealer. Also you might end up with the wrong parts.|||Any reputable auto repair shop will not install customer supplied parts. Pay them for the parts and installation.|||Well, a shop may charge you slightly more but since there doing the work, let them go get the parts. They get discounts and charge you retail, not the price there getting it for or even the sale price to consumers. But its easy enough paying another few dollars then to go buy the parts when chances are, the mechanic is going to run into another problem and have to buy run and go buy other parts anyway.|||Some times when you buy the parts from the shop it may cost a couple bucks more. But sometimes by buying parts from them, they will give you a sweet deal on labor costs. And they have warranties on anything you buy and have put in.

Would it be fair to charge 500 for it or would I be ripping someone off? Where should I sell it for parts? Or would it be better to just sell it off as it is?|||Scrapping it won't bring much. You would do better putting it on Craigslist or an ebay free "classified ad". Make sure to inform the potential buyers that is does not run and is sold as-is. People are looking for fixer upper projects all the time. Do not part it out at your house. How can i buy salvage title car for parts only?

I want to buy a car which was in collision. However the car has undamaged parts on it.Such as engine and transmission.Owner is not parting it out but selling the whole car .She says she has salvage title. What are the frauds of buying selling this kind of title? Can i just buy the car and tow it in my garage and get the parts then bring it in junk yard without registering vehicle?|||Yeah, no problem at all. Just buy it, tow it home and do what you want with it.

There is no requirement to register a car. Especially a salvage one you intend to use for parts.

Just realize that the car will never be able to be registered without cleaning up the title, which only re builders can do.

As long as the seller has clear title in his name, you should be fine.

Just make sure its in the sellers name. Far less chance of it being stolen that way.

--

Edit, you can check with the cops or the DMV to see if it is stolen. Carfax might show that too but its a waste of money otherwise. If the sellers name is on the front, chances are very, very high its not stolen.

Theres no other security benefit to registering it. Indeed, in many states, YOU CANT register a salvage car because you cant drive one.

The only thing you would get would possibly be a title with your name on the front instead of the back.

And you dont really need that as long as you retain the bill of sale %26amp; title.|||Try to sell the car less parts you need to a junkyard first. They will tell you what you need to make it legal and it will give you a sense of the value,,,Who knows you might make money.

I am opening a car parts business. I am gonna buy cars, strip them and sell. How can I price parts?

Knowing the cost of the car, and how much I intend to make out of it, is there a way I can figure out suitable prices for the parts, for example: motor %30??|||Look on craigslist and eBaym|||Parting out cars is a BAD idea to make money since most people barely break even when they do part out a car. Established wrecking yards make tons of money. The car salvage business is the most profitable business!!! But only if your a established yard. The internet is packed full of private one party ads for used parts or parting out posts and almost always the parts are not worth much at all and very few are sold. Yes there are some cars that car fetch a lot of money parted out but since you don't sound like you know every make model and year and what actually has value you should not even try.

People talk about "rare" cars while there are SOME rare cars out there most of them are rare only for the reason they didn't sell well or they all were so crappy they went to the scrap heap years and years ago. Now the only rare cars that can make even a decent profit are 60 to 100 years old. And even those cars have been picked pretty clean and truly are a rare find.

Also the internet is packed full of people who basically want to "steal" parts from people. Usually anyone who responds to an ad has a project car at home that he is no hurry to get finished. These guys enjoy looking for parts and offer ridiculously low money for the parts, all so they can say how they "stole" the parts he needed to fix the car up. They are quite literally the scum of the car parts buying crowd. Where the real money is right now in used cars is in the metals they are made of. Right now the prices paid for scrap metal is high. Some cars catalytic converters can be worth more than you paid for the car itself.

Time and time again people get your idea and giev it a try and find it only cost them money.|||Sounds like you don't have the first clue what you are doing.

Junkyards tend to price parts at about half of new. U pull it places less than that.

For YOU to sell parts, you would have to price your parts at about 50-75% of a junkyards prices. Or 25-37% of what they cost new.

Even then, you will find that your parts wont sell oftentimes.

How to take a 4 speed console out of a 1967 parts car?

Ok, here's the problem, I have to find out if it's easy to take out a 4 speed console out of a 1967 Chevy Impala parts car. We need the part for a restore, 1967 "SAME".

What is the work involved to take that part out without damage to the part or anything else under that part. I have to do this and lets just say, I'm a first timer! LOL

So if you know, in detail, how to do this. The information would be much appericated. THANKS!

PEACE|||just look at it and see where all the bolts are and start taking the bolts out 1 at a time and eventually you will have it out in one piece, a good place to start is by opening the console door and taking the bolts out or screws, whichever, and go from there, I'm sure there are 2 screws under the console lid that hold the top plate of the console on and once you get that top console piece off the rest is a snap as the rest of the bolts that hold it to the floor will be in plain sight.|||how much you have done so far ?

Does intakes improve on MPG? im thinking about getin a injen or K%26amp;N? And also Exhaust? thinkin about Works.|||The last episode of Fifth Gear showed that the best way of improving you MPG is the correct tire inflation and driving conservatively. You will get a better MPG with the air intake but the price of the intake will most likely offset the cost benefits.|||The truth is yes and no. Think of an engine as a type of self powered air pump.

There are many factors involved . RPM, airflow in the intake and exhaust, engine size, compression ratio, bore ,stroke, valve lift, cam lift, cam duration, cam lob separation, cam lob timing (intake/exhaust), power-band of the combination of the system.

Modern cams and heads are designed to work with a set amount of back-pressure to match the emissions systems.

A K%26amp;N filter allows more airflow BUT the throttle plates is what restricts the airflow into the engine and controls the speed . The K%26amp;N helps most at WOT (wide open throttle) ,in stock trim marginal at best. A poor quality filter is restrictive and will choke an engine at lower speeds. I had access to a dyno and tried this and found Fram are only good at mid range running as long as they are clean and dry others very greatly, Delco and Fomoco are decint.

The spiral kits(tornado) for the air cleaner aren't worth the $$$ because under normal driving you aren't running under WOT and very marginal at best there. if under the throttle plates it may work better.

The exhaust ,If changed and no longer matches the rest of the system can drastically alter your fuel mileage to the poor. My nephew put a new performance muffler on his P/U and lost almost 1/2 his mileage he put on the correct one and got it back.

So don't make any changes that you cannot change back.|||Well it all depends on what kind of car you have, is it new stock or what? Getting yourself an intake and a more free flowing exhaust will improve by maybe 2-3mpg it all depends on your car. When it comes to exhaust that goes for headers, high flow cats, or just take the cat off, illegal but better and also louder, and after cat exhaust, and if no cat, then just run a test pipe, for intake depending if where you live has a lot of rain or flooding, go for short ram cause with a cold air your car can hydro lock and your engine is dead. simple things too, check tire pressure, maintain the car, change it's oil when you need to. reduce the weight of the car, don't carry around unnecessary things, you could always take your spare tire out and get Fix a Flat that's at least 10 pounds off. And most of all, your driving style, unless you're being chased by people who want to kill you there's really no need to be going any faster than the speed limit or traffic.

http://www.howtoadvice.com/savinggas|||Just bolting on new parts won't achieve much unless you consider how the whole engine tuning package will be affected.

A new intake will affect what kind of camshaft, ignition timing curve, fuel delivery system will be required. Likewise with the exhaust.

I would recommend getting in touch with a reputable engine tuner and discussing what works best with your particular engine bearing in mind what use you will put it to. An engine built for the race track will have different requirements to one for everyday driving in traffic.

Good luck!.|||Both changes will have a slight improvement in you MPG. The biggest thing you will feel is the improvement in overall performance. I have personally done the K%26amp;N Filter replacement on my 97 Fat Boy with the addition of Vance and Haines Long Shot Exhaust. I have replaced my stock air filter in my 2004 Dodge Ram. This helped my towing going thru the mountains from Ten. to Mich. and back. There was an improvement of 2 miles per gallon on my trucks computer by this change. I changed out the filter in a 2002 Honda Accord with the same improvements. I have liked the small MPG improvements but have really enjoyed the performance difference. I plan on doing the same to my recently purchased 2008 Hyundai Tiburon. These are always the first steps to performance upgrades.|||Opening up the intake and exhaust side of an engine, will give you some power increase, the problem is it moves your power band higher, so if you drive a lot with wide open throttle, these mods are for you. If you want a daily driver with low end and mid range performance these mods will not make much difference. As to mileage, possibly, doubt you will notice a difference.|||it might marginally improve your MPG by changing your intake and exhaust. though, i don't think it would be worth it cause the savings would be rather negligible in spite of what manufacturers like to claim|||I don't think your going after better gas mileage as much as you are more power. As for better gas mileage your better off just taking the money your going to waste on addons and save it for gas.

Why does a "parts car" sell for more than the same car that's running?

I've been looking for parts for my old car (its 1981), and for some reason I noticed that sometimes the same car that's salvaged and being sold for just its parts is more expensive than the same car thats up and running. How does that make any sense? It's better to buy the car that's perfectly fine and use that for parts instead of buying some old rusty one.|||Try buying those parts individually from a wrecking yard. You can almost always make more money by parting out a car than by selling it to a wrecking yard. Someone who sells a car for parts does so because he knows the parts are in demand and doesn't want to settle for what a wrecking yard will pay him.|||" I noticed that sometimes the same car that's salvaged and being sold for just its parts is more expensive than the same car thats up and running" that should answer it sometimes people will charge more, im not sure what everyone else is talking about but a parts car is just that a parts car unless its an oddball care there parts car should never be more than buying a running decent condition car. and if you see that with your model that seems to be the case then buy a running model take what u need then you will also have a parts car to charge more than its worth.|||u always want an up and running car over a parts piece of crap.
